BANNER ELK, N.C. - Berin Boracic scored two goals and had the
assist on Richard Guffens' game-winning goal as the No. 1
Lees-McRae College Bobcats (13-0-1) defeated the Tusculum College
Pioneers (8-4-1), 4-1, Saturday in nonconference men's soccer
action.
The Bobcats broke onto the scoreboard with five minutes left
before the end of the first half when Guffens laid a pass off to a
cutting Luke Perry. Perry ripped a shot 30-yard shot just under
the crossbar to give the Bobcats the 1-0 lead.
Marc Joseph tied the score in the 65th minute for Tusculum when
he received a pass from Anteneh Lemma and launched a shot from
20-yards for the goal.
But five minutes later, Guffens got his head on a Boracic corner
for the game winner. Boracic sent a bending ball into the box,
where Guffens worked through the Tusculum defense to snap the
header into the net to make it 2-1.
Boracic followed with his first goal of the match less than a
minute later when he received a long pass from Luke Perry. Boracic
outran the Pioneers back line and flipped a shot over the charging
keeper.
The game got its final goal in the 81st minute when Boracic
received a pass from Grant Elder and scored. Elder collected the
ball on a pass from David Palmer that was deflected by a Tusculum
defender. Elder found a cutting Boracic, who finished near post to
make it 4-1.
Sean paradise made six saves for the Bobcats between the
pipes.
Lees-McRae held a slight shot advantage, 12-11, and both teams
had four corner kicks during the match.
The match was a rematch from the 2008 NCAA Tournament's Round of
16, where the Bobcats fell 2-0. The Bobcats also fell to Tusculum
2-1 during the regular season.
Lees-McRae will host North Georgia College and State University
Tuesday at 5 p.m. for their next match.
