GREENEVILLE, TENN. -- Whitney Justice recorded 18 kills, five
blocks and a .457 hitting percentage to lead the Lees-McRae College
volleyball team to a 3-1 win over host Tusculum College Tuesday
night at Pioneer Arena.
The Bobcats (14-4) won the match by scores of 25-23, 25-20,
13-25, 25-16. Lees-McRae is riding a four-match winning streak
and has won 10 of its last 11 outings.
Lees-McRae's Katie-Marie Legg added 10 kills, while setter Megan
Mitchell posted a double-double with 38 assists and 11 digs in the
victory. Luana Rocha collected a match-high 17 digs.
Tusculum (11-9) was led by Sam Underwood as she tallied a
double-double with 10 kills and a dozen digs to go along with a
.474 hitting percentage (10-1-19). Setter Peyton Colclough tallied
a match-high 45 assists, while Carly Swisher accounted for 14 kills
in the loss.
The opening set was thriller as the frame was tied 15 times,
including six lead changes. With Tusculum leading 22-21, following
a kill by Bailee Price, Lees-McRae responded with a 4-1 run that
included a pair of kills by Justice and a service ace by Rocha on
set-point as the Bobcats won the opening frame 25-23.
In the second set, Lees-McRae jumped out to an 8-1 lead and
would take its biggest advantage of the frame at 18-9 following a
kill by Justice. Tusculum responded with an 8-3 run, including an
ace by Swisher and a kill by Price as the Pioneers trailed 21-17.
But after a Lady Bobcat timeout, Justice recorded kills in two of
the final three points of the set as the Bobcats prevailed
25-20.
It was all Tusculum in the third set as the Pioneers rolled to a
25-13 win. TC scored the first five points and would eventually
move out to a commanding 19-7 lead thanks to back-to-back kills by
senior Gina Coffaro. Coffaro would close out the frame with a kill
on set point as the Pioneers moved the match to 2-1.
Lees-McRae answered in the fourth frame as Bobcats went on a 4-0
run and never looked back as LMC posted a .289 hitting percentage,
while limiting Tusculum to .077 in the set.
Lees-McRae will host Converse Thursday night at 7 p.m. for their
next match.
