BELMONT, N.C. - The Belmont Abbey College Crusaders used four
players in double digit points to earn a 88-68 win over the
Lees-McRae College Bobcats men's basketball team Thursday night in
a Conference Carolinas game.
Kyle Boardman scored 24 points to lead all scorers in the game and
to record his fifth 20-point performance during the season. He was
an impressive 9-of-18 from the floor and 3-of-5 from behind the
three-point arc. Sam Youse was the only other Bobcat in double
figures with 17 points on a steaming 6-of-7 overall and 5-of-6 from
three.
The Abbey's four scorers in double digits were Richard Barbee who
scored 21 points, Kyle Phillips with 13 points, Kashif Gumbs , who
scored 12 points, and Alex Pledger with11 points.
Forty-five seconds into the competition Boardman tied the game at
two on a layup, but that would be as close as Lees-McRae would get
to the lead.
Over the next seven minutes The Abbey controlled the game, but a
three pointer by Aaron Woodacre and a layup by Josh Kurtz on
back-to-back possessions cut the lead to three, 18-15, with just
under 12 minutes remaining.
With the lead still at three, 26-23, following a Boardman layup
Belmont Abbey went on a 11-2 run to extend the lead to 37-25 with
2:51 remaining in the half. The half ended with The Abbey up
40-29.
Nine minutes into the second half the Crusaders opened the game up
to a 20-point lead, 64-44, on a Phillips' layup.
Lees-McRae couldn't close the distance as the lead hit its peak
with 3:23 remaining, 85-60, and ended with Belmont Abbey up
88-68.
Belmont Abbey was 52 percent from the floor and 55 percent from
three, while Lees-McRae was 44 percent overall and 50 percent from
three.
The Abbey won the turnover battle forcing 24 Lees-McRae turnovers,
while only turning it over 17 times themselves.
Lees-McRae will return to the hardwood Saturday, February 14th at 4
p.m. at Mount Olive College.
