GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College Bobcats men's lacrosse
team lost their season opener Thursday afternoon in a nonconference
game against the Greensboro College Pride, 10-5.
Madison Thompson scored the Bobcats' first goal of the 2009 season
when he found the back of the net with 4:55 left remaining in the
first quarter to make the score 1-0.
Greensboro quickly answered three minutes later to tie the game and
then scored the first two goals in the second period to make it
3-1.
Edward Dolan closed the gap to 3-2 when he scored with 5:55 left in
the period on an assist from Neil Sleight.
After another Pride goal, Lees-McRae answered with two more goals
right before the half to make tie the game at four going into the
intermission. The first goal came when Kyle Ficken scored an
unassisted goal, and the second came on Sleight goal with the
assist from Matt Smith.
In the second half it was all the Pride, who scored six second half
goals, including two with a man advantage, compared to one for the
Bobcats.
After Greensboro scored the first two goals of the half, Danny Ives
scored the lone goal for Lees-McRae with 1:34 left in the quarter
on an assist from Brandon Marks to make it 6-5.
After the Ives goal, the Pride scored four unanswered goals to
close the game and make the final score 10-5.
Greensboro outshot Lees-McRae 35-18 including 22-11 shots on goal
and picked up 22 ground balls compared to 14 for the Bobcats.
Sleight led the Bobcat offense with two points with a goal and an
assist. Brandon Marks and Derin Vacca collected three ground balls
apiece, and John White forced three turnovers.
Andy Nesdill took the loss between the pipes despite making 11
saves.
Lees-McRae will open their conference schedule this weekend when
they travel to Queens University of Charlotte to take on the Royals
February 21st at 2:00 p.m.
