BANNER ELK, N.C. - Sophomores Aaron Woodacre, who scored 26
points, and Jesse Hoots, who handed out a career high 14 assists,
gave the Lees-McRae College Bobcats men's basketball team their
second win of the season, 73-64, and season sweep of the Limestone
College Saints Monday night in a Conference Carolinas clash in
Williams Gymnasium.
The win snaps a nine game skid and improves the Bobcats to 2-23
overall and 2-13 in the conference, while the Saints fall to 8-14
overall and 6-9 in the conference.
Hoots' 14 assists ties him for sixth in the nation in Division II
basketball in assists in a single game and places him first in the
conference in that category. He boasted a 7-to-1 turnover ration
in the game, 14 assists and two turnovers.
Woodacre's 26 points was a game high for the Bobocats. Freshman
Kyle Boardman recorded his third double-double of the season with
19 points and 11 rebounds. Eleven of his 19 points came in the
second half.
Michael Barrett, who scored 21 points, led Limestone. Anthony
Middleton had a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds.
Barrett and Middleton were the only two Saints in double
digits.
Limestone jumped out to a 10-2 lead two minutes into the contest
highlighted by four Middleton points and a blocked shot.
A Barrett three pointer with 11:22 showing on the clock gave the
Saints a 12-point lead, 22-10, and another Barrett field goal six
minutes later gave the Saints a 13 point lead, 33-20, for the
largest lead of the half.
Lees-McRae's offense hit a rhythm following the Barrett bucket as
the Bobcats went on a 17-2 run to close the half. During the run,
Woodacre drilled three threes and Boardman canned another to give
the Bobcats a 38-36 lead at the break.
The two teams had identical numbers from the floor and behind the
arc in the first half. They were 42 percent from the floor and 50
percent from three.
After the break, Shawn Creal knocked down a trey to give the Saints
a one point lead, 39-38, but Hoots kept the ball and responded with
his own three give the Bobcats the lead right back and for
good.
The Bobcats kept their distance in the second half until a Barrett
field goal with 4:58 to play cut the lead to two, 61-59, but
Woodacre again stepped up and knocked down a three for the
Bobcats.
Woodacre sealed the deal for the Bobcats when he sank two free
throws with 35 seconds to play to push the lead to 73-64 and give
the game its final score.
In the second half, Lees-McRae was a scorching 48 percent from the
field and 40 percent from three, while Limestone dropped to 27
percent overall and just eight percent from behind the three point
line.
Lees-McRae scored 36 points from long range, while Limestone had 21
points.
The Bobcats averaged 1.11 points per shot, and Limestone only
averaged .88 points per shot.
Lees-McRae will take to the hardwood again Thursday, February 12
against Belmont Abbey at 7:30 p.m.
