BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College Bobcats (2-11, 1-5)
men's basketball team picked up their first Conference Carolinas
win, 73-64, over the Coker College Cobras (2-5, 5-8) Saturday
afternoon in Williams Gymnasium led by two 11 point performances
from Josh Kurtz and Jeremy Helms.
Coker took an early lead before the Bobcats would tie the game
at seven four minutes into the game, but six minutes later the
Cobras again the lead up 18-12. Lees-McRae would fight back and
tie the game at 21 with 6:32 remaining in the half and quickly take
a 29-21 lead with 3:47 left to play. Coker closed the gap to two,
30-32, with six seconds left, but an Anthony Johnson field goal at
the buzzer gave Lees-McRae a 34-30 halftime advantage.
After the half, Coker took a one point lead, 35-34 only to see
the Bobcats retake the lead 37-35 with 17:19 left. Two minutes
later, with the score tied at 40, Lees-McRae would take the lead
for the final time in the game on an Adam McFerran field goal. A
Reshon Benjamin field goal gave the Bobcats a 52-42 lead with 10:59
remaining in the half. Coker would close the gap to four, 61-57,
with just over four minutes remaining, but the Bobcats would push
the lead and close out the game with a 73-64 win.
The Bobcats were 40 percent from the floor and 23 percent from
three, while the Cobras were 47 percent from the floor and 29
percent from three.
Kurtz was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and 3-of-3 from the
free throw line for the Bobcats. Behind Kurtz's and Helms' 11
points, the Bobcats received scoring from nine points from
Benjamin, eight points from Jesse Hoots, and seven points from Sean
Hardin, Daniel Sepokas and McFerran. Hardin and Stephan Haymer
grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, and Kurtz had six boards. Hoots
also handed out six assists.
For Coker, Mason Ambler recorded a double-double with 19 points
and ten rebounds. Thomas Wright also added 19 points for the
Cobras, and Delonte Doles had four assists.
In the first game, the women's basketball team defeated Coker,
79-63, marking the first time since February 20th against Limestone
when the two teams both won their game in same day of a conference
doubleheader. The women won 71-68 and the men won 73-57 that day
against the Saints.
The Bobcats will play the Saints for their next game on Monday
at Limestone with tipoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
