North Georgia slips past Bobcats, 2-1, in extra time

Box score

DAHLONEGA, Ga. --- Mikki Bozickovic (Visoko, Bosnia) scored his first goal of the season midway through the second extra time period on Thursday evening to propel the North Georgia College & State University men's soccer team to a 2-1 overtime win over visiting Lees-McRae College.

North Georgia (6-3-3) outshot the Bobcats (8-3-2) by a 16-9 margin, including a 4-0 advantage in extra time, as Bozickovic and Daniel Vergara (Sincelejo, Colombia) each found the back of the net to pace the Saints. Chris Griffith (Marietta, Ga.) added an assist for the Saints, while Lees Squires (Sheffield, U.K.) netted his team-leading eighth goal of the season for the Bobcats. Jarrett Fleharty (Mocksville, N.C.) chipped in an assist for Lees-McRae.

The match remained scoreless until midway through the 57th minute, when Vergara headed a cross from Griffith inside the left post to give North Georgia a 1-0 lead. Squires would level the match in the closing seconds of the 76th minute, flicking a header over the North Georgia keeper off a cross from Fleharty to even the score at 1-1.

Lees-McRae would try to capitalize on the swing in momentum, forcing NGU goalkeeper Kristopher Alonzo (Dacula, Ga.) to make several spectacular saves to send the match into extra time.

Neither team could find the breakthrough for nearly 15 minutes in the extra periods, until Bozickovic made a run into the box, and after beating several Lees-McRae defenders, slotted the deciding finish into the bottom corner of the net late in the 105th minute to notch the 2-1 win for the Saints.

The Bobcats return to the pitch on Wednesday, October 20 when they host Mars Hill College in a pivotal NCAA Division II Southeast Region matchup. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. at Tate Field.
