BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Megan Epperson (St. John,
Ind.) recorded a double-double with 13 kills and 11 digs to lead
the Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team to a three-set sweep
of Erskine College in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday
afternoon.
Lees-McRae (14-6, 12-0 CC) extended its winning streak to 11
matches while maintaining its perfect record against league
opponents, entering the stretch run with a comfortable cushion over
the second-place Flying Fleet (14-7, 10-3 CC). The Lady Bobcats won
the match by scores of 25-23, 25-21, and 25-21.
Epperson led the way for the Lady Bobcats with 13 kills and a
.400 hitting percentage, while also recording 11 digs to notch her
11th double-double of the season. Whitney Justice (Connelly
Springs, N.C.) knocked in 10 kills of her own, while Megan Mitchell
(Minden, Nev.) notched a match-high 35 assists and four service
aces.
Sandra Campbell (Pilot Point, Texas) paced the Flying Fleet with
10 kills on 20 swings, while Larz Chabra (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.)
recorded 29 assists. Jamie Murphy (Mermann, Mo.) chipped in eight
kills of her own, while Liz Massey (Greenville, S.C.) paced Erskine
with nine digs.
Lees-McRae surged to an early 5-1 lead in the first set before
widening the margin to 13-5 after Mitchell's serve dropped in on
the heels of a 6-0 run. Erskine would respond, cutting the lead to
13-11 with a 6-0 spurt of its own before the Lady Bobcats answered
with a 5-2 run to push the margin to 18-13.
The Flying Fleet launched another rallying, going on a 4-0 run
to even the score at 21-21 after Lees-McRae held a 21-17 advantage.
Lees-McRae would answer again, closing out the set with a 4-2 spurt
to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Lady Bobcats would carry the momentum into the second set,
opening an early 14-5 lead before the Flying Fleet responded with a
9-4 run to cut the margin to 18-14 on a kill by Campbell. Both
teams would continue to battle, with the Lady Bobcats emerging with
the upper hand and a 2-0 lead in the match.
The two top teams in the conference would battle once again in
the third set, with holding a slim 9-8 edge before the Lady Bobcats
went on a 9-3 run to take a 17-12 lead on a kill by Epperson.
Erskine would fight back, cutting the margin to 22-19 with a 7-5
spurt before Lees-McRae closed out the set and the match with two
of the final three points to stay perfect in league play.
Lees-McRae would then square off against Tusculum College later
in the afternoon, with a match time set for 3 p.m.
