BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Megan Epperson (St. John,
Ind.) tallied 11 kills and a match-high 15 digs to lead the
Lees-McRae College women's volleyball team to a three-set sweep of
Barton College in Conference Carolinas play on Saturday
afternoon.
Lees-McRae (11-6, 9-0 CC) held the Bulldogs (9-9, 7-3 CC) to a
0.047 hitting percentage, while posting a .209 clip on the attack.
Whitney Justice (Connelly Springs, N.C.) posted a match-high 12
kills, while Taylor Clendenin (Statesville, N.C.) and Dana Oliver
(Davie, Fla.) each recorded 10 digs. Clendenin also chipped in six
kills and Megan Mitchell (Minden, Nev.) tallied a match-high 36
assists.
Barton's Melissa Ritter (Wescosville, Pa.) posted a team-high
nine kills and 13 digs, while Carly Love (Oxford, N.C.) recorded 27
assists. Meagan Parrott (Oxford, N.C.) notched seven kills and
Kristen Peschock (Statesville, N.C.) added 12 digs to lead the
Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early 7-1 lead in the first set
before Lees-McRae responded, launching a 11-5 run to knot the score
at 12-12 on a kill by Clendenin. Neither team could gain more than
a two-point advantage for the remainder of the set, as the Lady
Bobcats recorded the final three points of the frame, including a
pair of kills by Epperson en route to a 26-24 victory.
Lees-McRae started strong in the second set, opening an early
4-0 advantage before the Bulldogs launched an 8-3 run to take an
8-7 lead on a service ace by Kati Wood (Pasadena, Md.). The Lady
Bobcats responded with an 8-3 run to claim a 15-11 advantage,
before pushing the lead to 23-16 on a kill from Justice. Lees-McRae
then closed out the set on a kill by Epperson to take a commanding
2-0 lead in the match with a 25-19 second-set victory.
The third set began in much the same fashion as the first, with
the Bulldogs opening an early 7-4 margin on a Wood service ace.
Lees-McRae struck back with an 8-4 run, taking a 12-11 lead on a
block by Epperson and Justice. Neither team could gain more than a
two-point advantage for the remainder of the set, as the Lady
Bobcats closed out the three-set sweep with the final three points
of the frame, including a match-ending kill by Clendenin to run
LMC's conference-leading record to a perfect 9-0.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Tuesday when the Lady Bobcats
travel to Misenhiemer, N.C. for a 7 p.m. conference matchup with
Pfeiffer University.
