RALEIGH, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College women's softball team
took a double-header sweep, 4-1 and 3-0, over Meredith College
Sunday afternoon in nonconference games behind the arm of Magen
West who pitched 14 innings and earned two wins.
The Lady Bobcats improve to 4-4 overall and earned their second
double-header sweep of the season.
In the first game, West went seven innings and allowed only one
run to earn the win for Lees-McRae.
The Lady Bobcats struck first in the top of the first when
Ashley Benfield walked and scored on a single to center off the bat
of Paige Coleman, however Meredith would answer in the bottom of
the first with a run on a single stolen base, sac bunt and a
groundout to second.
In the second, Anna Carter would walk and scored the
game-winning run when Benfield drew a bases loaded walk. Nicole
Baxter and Nicole Salado single to set up the Benfield walk.
Lees-McRae would score two more runs, one in the fourth off
another bases loaded walk and one fifth when Coleman doubled and
scored on a West single, to win 4-1.
Coleman led the Lady Bobcats offensively with two hits in four
at bats and an RBI. Salado was 1-for-2 with an RBI.
In game two, West again the distance this time not yielding a
run and recording three strikeouts.
For the second straight game the Lady Bobcats scored in the
first inning. This time Veronica Ollier walked, stole second and
third and scored on Kim Coley sacrifice fly.
Lees-McRae would score their second run in the fifth inning when
Salado single to right and scored on a Coley single to center.
The final run of the game came in the seventh inning when Salado
tripled and scored on another Coley single to give the game the
final of 3-0.
Salado led the Lady Bobcats by going 2-for-3 with two runs
scored. Coley was also 2-for-3 with three RBI. Carter had two
hits in three trips to plate, as well for the Lady Bobcats.
Lees-McRae's next game will come Wednesday on the road at
Milligan at 2 p.m.
