MARS HILL, N.C. - Tara West held Lees-McRae to one hit in game
one, and Natalie Haithcox belted two homeruns in game two of a
softball doubleheader as Mars Hill swept Lees-McRae by scores of
11-0 in five innings and 9-2 to improve to 9-1 overall. The Bobcats
fall to 6-6 overall.
In game one, Mars Hill scored four runs in the first inning.
Ashley Angell scored on a wild pitch to get the Lions on the board.
Leading 2-0, Taylor Morris hit a two-run single up the middle.
Already leading 7-0, Mars Hill added another four runs in the
fourth inning. After Angell led off the inning by reaching on an
error, Ashley Seawell jacked a two-run homerun over the left field
fence to give the Lions a nine-run lead. Later in the inning,
Amanda McArthur and Jade Bullins each recorded a RBI for the final
tally.
West, from Urbana, Ohio, improved to 5-0 with the win in game
one. She gave up no runs on one hit in four innings. Morris threw
one inning of relief and also allowed only one hit.
Magen West dropped to 5-3 with the loss in game one. She
surrendered eight earned runs on nine hits in only four
innings.
Haithcox, from Asheboro, N.C., opened the scoring in game two in
the second inning. She took Bryce Campbell out of the park on a
solo shot to left field.
Lees-McRae answered in the next inning. Kim Coley hit a RBI
double to center field and later scored off a Paige Coleman single
to give the Bobcats a 2-1 advantage.
The Lions tied the game in the bottom of the inning and took the
upper hand for good in the fourth. Haithcox led off the fourth
inning with her second homerun of the game to give Mars Hill a 3-2
lead.
The Lions exploded for five runs in the sixth inning to put the
game away. Bullins, with two RBI, Seawell, and Anna James all
recorded a RBI in the inning.
Tiffany Farthing won her fourth game of the season in game two.
She gave up two earned runs on three hits in four innings.
Morris earned her second save of the season with three innings
of relief pitching. Like the first game, she allowed only one
hit.
Campbell fell to 1-3 with the loss in game two. She allowed
eight earned runs on 13 hits in six innings.
