BRISTOL, TENN. - The King College Tornado took two games from
the Lees-McRae College women's softball team Monday, 4-1 and
8-3.
King improved to 4-0 on the young season and Lees-McRae slipped
to 6-8. It was the first sweep for King in the last five
doubleheaders against Lees-McRae.
Danielle Zimmerman tossed her second and third complete games of
2010. She struck out nine, scattered four hits and walked three in
the first contest. In the nightcap, Zimmerman recorded a dozen
strikeouts as she allowed three runs, one earned, on five hits.
Stephanie Mueller put King in front of game one thanks to her
solo home run with two outs in the opening inning. She went onto
end the doubleheader 5-for-7. Mueller was 3-for-3 in the first game
and 2-for-4 in the second.
The home team added two fourth-inning runs on back-to-back
groundouts for insurance. Christy Kooch and Emilee Edelman had the
RBIs. Mueller and Aubree Hutt scored the runs.
Edelman crossed home in the sixth after Shauna Haga singled deep
in the hole on the left side of the infield.
Veronica Ollier scored on a long single by Kim Coley in the
fifth for Lees-McRae's first run.
The Lady Tornado went 5-for-10 with two outs in the game.
Emily Bennett added a 2-for-3 effort in the opener.
Magen West tossed six innings and suffered the loss. She allowed
four runs on nine hits.
The second game got started with another first inning home run.
This time Haga delivered the pitch over the left-center fence.
Lees-McRae capitalized on three walks and an error for three
second inning runs.
A two out RBI single from Edelman in the third brought King
within a run. Mueller scored from second on the ball to left
field.
Mackenzie Draine put King back in front 4-3 with her two run
home run in the fourth inning. Mueller delivered a two-run single
up the middle and a sac fly from Edelman provided a larger cushion
for the Lady Tornado.
Haga had a 2-for-4 game at the plate to end the night.
Paige Coleman was 2-for-3 for Lees-McRae.
Katie Alexander had six innings of work as she allowed eight
runs, six earned, on 10 hits. She struck out one and walked another
Lady Tornado.
