WILSON, N.C. - The Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats softball team spilt a
doubleheader against the Barton College Lady Bulldogs with a 5-1
win and a 1-0 loss Tuesday afternoon in a Conference Carolinas
softball game.
The Lady Bobcats are now 8-12 overall and 2-2 in the conference,
and Barton is 8-13 overall and 1-1 in the conference.
In game one, Lees-McRae got on the scoreboard first in the top
of the fifth inning when Anna Carter singled to center. Pinch
runner, Casey Talley, stole second and the scored when Nicole
Salado reached on an error.
Barton would tie the game in the bottom of the second when they
notched an unearned run, but the Lady Bobcats would claim the win
the top of the seventh with four runs.
Carter started the inning off with a second and Meagan Knowles
followed with a double to put runners on second and third with no
outs. With one out Ashley Benfield singled to drive in a run and
Kristie Moon single to drive in the second run of the inning.
Paula Fryar followed with a single to score Benfield and scored
when Nicole Baxter reached on an error to give the Lady Bobcats the
5-1 win.
Magen West went the distance for Lees-McRae in the circle
allowing just four hits and no earned runs. She also struck out
seven batters.
Carter led the Bobcats offensively with two hits and a walk.
Moon was also 2-for-2 with a run scored and a RBI.
Game two was a pitching duel with Barton scoring the game's only
run in the fourth inning off a Lady Bobcats error. Lees-McRae was
outhit 7-2 in the contest.
Carter and Benfield had the team's only hits of the game.
West again went all seven innings allowing just one unearned
run. In the two games, West threw 13 innings, recorded 10
strikeouts and gave up no earned runs.
Lees-McRae will return to the diamond Saturday at Queens at 1
p.m.
