SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba claimed a pair of walk-off wins 3-2 and
5-3 against visiting the Lees-McRae Lady Bobcats in softball action
on Wednesday afternoon at Whitley Field.
Amanda Terry did the honor in the opener with a RBI-single then
Brittney Thornburg turned the trick in the nightcap with a two-run
homer. Catawba improves to 23-12, while the Bobcats fall to
10-16.
Brittany Murray improved to 15-2 with her win in the opener. She
allowed four hits, one earned run and struck out four. Catawba
managed just six hits off Bobcat starter Magen West, but one was a
two-out, two-run single by Allie Marshall in the third that gave
the Lady Indians a 2-0 lead.
West hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth to trim Catawba's lead in
half then Anna Carter drove home the tying run on a two-out single
in the sixth. Thornburg singled to lead off the Catawba seventh and
a bunt single by Alli Justice put runners on the corners. Terry
followed with a single to center to end the game.
Lees-McRae took the early lead in game two on a solo home run by
West in the second. Catawba picked up two runs in the third, the
first scoring after Marshall's liner into left-center was caught,
but the throw to the infield got away allowing Carly Sabat to score
from second. Thornburg drove in the go-ahead run three batters
later after a hit by Tara Gibbs and a walk to Katie Huggins.
The Bobcats regained the lead in the fourth as Bryce Campbell
hit a two-out, two-run homer. Catawba answered right back as
Marshall singled with two outs to plate Callie Gordy.
Gibbs led off the Catawba seventh with a single, but was erased
at second on a sacrifice attempt by Mollie Kovalcin. Thornburg then
ended things with a home run to left center. Sabat, Gibbs,
Thornburg and Gordy each collected a pair of hits for Catawba.
West had two hits for LMC. Kelsie Hudson improved to 6-1 with
the win for Catawba. She scattered five hits and had one
strikeout.
