WEDDINGTON, N.C. - Josh Shingleton led the Lees-McRae men's
lacrosse team with four total points as the Bobcats improved to 3-0
with a 12-8 win over the Grand Canyon Antelopes Friday night.
Shingleton had three goals and one assists in the game.
John White and Shingleton started the game's scoring off with
two goals for the Bobcats in a two-minute span, but the Lopes would
answer with goals from Jacob Hippensteel and Kyle Bailey to the
game at two. In the final minutes of the first period Ryan LeBlanc
scored to put Lees-McRae up 3-2.
In period two, Brandon Marks, Shingleton and Forrest MacConnell
notched back-to-back-back goals to give the Bobcats a five 5-2
lead. However, Grand Canyon would cut the margin to 5-4 on two
goals from Billy Lloyd. Brett Yusiewicz and Matt Markey would
score for the Bobcats before half and Llody would add one more for
the Lopes to give the game the halftime score of 8-5
Lees-McRae.
Lloyd would score the first goal in the third period for the
Lopes before Shingleton notched his final goal of the game to make
it 9-6, but Scott Franks ended the scoring in the third with a goal
to cut the Bobcat lead down to 9-7.
In the fourth, Lees-McRae used three goals from Landon Guntman,
Marks and Yusiewicz to take control of the game. Lloyd did manage
to score the games final goal to give the game the final of
12-8.
Guntman had three points, one goal and two assists, and
Yusiewicz and Marks had two points apiece for the Bobcats.
Goalies Andy Nesdill and Mike Fahey split time between the pipes
for the Bobcats in the win. Nesdill had four saves and Fahey had
five saves in the contest.
The Bobcats outshot the Lopes 45-27 and won the ground ball
battle 33-25.
Lees-McRae's Ryan Sparks won 12 of his 16 face-offs and the team
won 17 of the 24 face-offs. Sparks also earned a team-high eight
groundballs.
The Bobcats are off to their best season start in school history
and will take their 3-0 record on the road against No. 5 Limestone
on March 18th for their next match.
