BANNER ELK, N.C. - The Lees-McRae College women's softball team
dropped a conference doubleheader to the visiting St. Andrews
Presbyterian Knights Saturday afternoon, 4-0 and 6-5.
In game one, St. Andrews' Nicole Bailey singled and scored on an
RBI by Danyell Marquez.
The game stayed 1-0 until the Knights added three insurance runs
in the top of the sixth. Lex Cowger led off the inning with a
singled her pinch runner, Kendra Norton, scored on a Kaitlin Harris
homerun to center that scrapped off the top of the fence. Brianna
Shurtleff added the game's final run when she single and scored on
a two-out double by Morgan Farroll.
Magen West when six innings and gave up three earned runs in the
loss, while Ashley Disque earned the win with seven shutout
innings.
The Lady Bobcats had five hits all from five different players
in the game, while Harris paced the Knights with two hits in three
trips to the plate and two RBI.
In game two, the two teams combined for 22 hits, 11 runs and six
errors.
Lees-McRae got on the scoreboard first in the bottom of the
first inning with two runs. Kierstie Moon singled, stole second
and third and scored on a two out single by Paige Coleman. Paula
Fryar followed with a double that sent Coleman to third. After an
Anna Carter walk, Nicole Baxter drove a single to center that
plated Coleman to make it 2-0.
However, St. Andrews would take a 3-2 lead in the top of the
second when they sent nine batters to plate and scored three runs.
Marquez started the inning off with a solo blast to left center and
Cowger and Eryn Wiley had RBI singles in the inning.
The Lady Bobcats tied the game in the bottom half of the second
with an unearned run. Jessie Travers singled and came around to
score on two St. Andrews' errors.
Again, the Knights would respond this time a Farroll two-run
blast to right center scored Marquez, who had doubled, to make it
5-3. Wiley scored an unearned run in the fourth inning on a Cowger
sacrifice fly to center to make it 6-3.
Lees-McRae would mount a rally in the sixth but would come up a
run short. Travers one out double and a Moon single set the table
for a two RBI double by Ashley Benfield. Lees-McRae would leave
Benfield and Kim Coley, who reached on a fielder's choice, stranded
at first and second to preserve the win for the Knights, 6-5.
Disque picked up her second win of the day with her second
complete game, while Bryce Campbell was saddled the loss for the
Lady Bobcats.
Travers and Coleman were 2-for-4 for Lees-McRae, and Moon was
2-for-3 with two runs scored. Fryar was 3-for-4 for the Lady
Bobcats.
Cowger led the Knights by going 2-for-3 with two RBI, and
Farroll was also 2-for-3. Marquez and Bailey were both 2-for-4 for
the Knights.
Lees-McRae will host Mount Olive for their final game of the
regular season Sunday at 2 p.m.
