SAVANNAH, GA. - No. 25-ranked Lees-McRae moved into the second
round of the 2010 NCAA Division II Men's Tennis Championships with
a 5-0 blanking of Conference Carolinas rival and No. 24-ranked
Anderson in NCAA Southeast Regional action on Thursday morning at
Bacon Park.
The Bobcats (16-5) pulled off the impressive task of knocking
off the Trojans (13-9) for the third time this season and the
second straight match as the two teams met in the Conference
Carolinas championship match in April - a 5-4 win by Lees-McRae -
but today's match had little of that drama.
Lees-McRae collected a quick 3-0 lead after doubles. Steve
Karendal and Travis VanHoy notched an 8-3 win over Renato Assuncao
and Ilya Zakharov at No. 1 doubles, while Shaun Sumner and Marko
Zivkovic also claimed an 8-3 win, downing Daniel Gonzalez and Deni
Mehagic at No. 3 doubles. Alex Hayes and Nandor Solymosi completed
the doubles sweep with an 8-5 win over Stan Atema and John Karle at
No. 2 doubles.
The Bobcats then won all six first sets in singles, and claimed
the victory with wins at No. 2 singles by Sumner over Zakharov,
6-1, 6-1, and at No. 4 singles with Zivkovic over Karle, 6-3,
6-1.
This is the second straight year that Lees-McRae has advanced to
the second round; up next for the Bobcats is a date with two-time
defending DII national champion and top-ranked Armstrong Atlantic
State at 10:00 a.m. on Friday. The two teams met earlier this
season, with AASU claiming a 9-0 win back on April 5.
