BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae College
women's soccer team rallied to victory over Mount Olive College
behind outstanding play from Vickie Rich (Arlington Heights, Ill.)
on Saturday evening. Rich tallied an assist in addition to the
match-winner via penalty kick to push the Lady Bobcats to a 2-1
victory.
Lees-McRae (4-2, 2-1 CC) opened the contest quickly taking
control of the ball and dictating the early tempo. Kaitlyn
Kerrigan (Lakewood Ranch, Fla.) opened the attack in the eighth
minute, taking a Rich offering and firing a shot off the far post
and into the net for her first goal of the season. Mount Olive
(3-3-1, 1-1-0 CC) responded 14 minutes later when Sarah Porter
(Havelock, N.C.) navigated her way into the box and registered a
goal, finishing just inside the near post to knot the contest at
1-1.
The contest remained 1-1 until late in the second half, when
Sarah Sims (Cary, N.C.) pushed the attack in the 85th minute, and
was taken to the turf inside the box allowing Rich the opportunity
for a penalty kick with just over five minutes remaining in the
contest. Rich provided a net finish in the nearside netting to put
the Lady Bobcats up 2-1 with time running out.
The Trojans pushed the attack, but were unable to net the
equalizer as the LMC defense stood firm and closed out the contest
to earn the victory.
The Lady Bobcats return to the pitch on Wednesday, traveling to
Bristol, Tenn. to take on King College in non-conference action.
The match is slated to kickoff at 2:30 p.m.
