WILSON, N.C. --- Lee Squires (Sheffield, U.K.)
scored the lone goal of the match to lead the Lees-McRae men's
soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Barton College in Conference
Carolinas play on Saturday night.
Lees-McRae (6-2, 4-0 CC) outshot the Bulldogs (1-7, 1-3 CC) by a
6-1 margin, including a 4-1 advantage in the first half, as the
Bobcats were forced to play a man short for nearly 50 minutes due
to a red card late in the opening period. Squires tallied his sixth
goal and first match-winner of the season, while Jamie Bladen
(Yorkshire, U.K.) added his third assist of the campaign.
The match remained scoreless until midway through the 70th
minute, when Bladen ripped a shot from distance that the keeper
deflected back into play, leaving Squires in perfect position to
deliver the deciding strike into the side netting to put the
Bobcats up 1-0. Lees-McRae would hold on for the victory, staving
off several magnificent Barton scoring chances despite playing a
man down.
Lees-McRae returns to the pitch on Wednesday when the Bobcats
travel to Bristol, Tenn. for a non-conference matchup with King
College. The match is slated to kick off at 5 p.m.
