BANNER ELK, N.C. --- Brooke Santerre (Port
Republic, Md.) tallied her first career hat trick, and added a pair
of assists to lead the Lees-McRae College women's soccer team to a
7-0 win over Converse College in Conference Carolinas play on
Monday night at Tate Field.
Lees-McRae (7-2, 4-1 CC) controlled the run of play for the
majority of the match, out-shooting the Valkryries (0-8-1, 0-2-1
CC) by a 40-1 margin, while putting 22 attempts on frame. Santerre
turned in a career performance, netting three goals and dishing out
a pair of assists to take over the team-lead in points with 17
markers.
Vickie Rich (Arlington Heights, Ill.) and MaryBeth Sullivan
(Greensboro, N.C.) each tallied a goal and two assists, with Rich
delivering her fifth match-winner of the season. Katelyn Custer
(Mooresville, N.C.) and Monica Young (Supply, N.C.) each tallied
their first goal of the season, while Custer and Kaitlyn Kerrigan
(Lakewood Ranch, Fla.) each notched an assist.
Rich opened the scoring early in the ninth minute, driving home
a rebound off Santerre's shot for her sixth goal of the season to
give LMC an early 1-0 lead. Santerre doubled the advantage late in
the 31st minute, delivering a wonderful finish off a cross from
Sullivan for her first goal of the night, sending the Lady Bobcats
into the interval with a 2-0 lead.
Sullivan extended the margin to 3-0 early in the second half,
taking a cross from Santerre and slotting it inside the far post in
the opening moments of the 49th minute. Santerre added her second
of the night in the 52nd minute, knocking it in off the keeper
after some wonderful set-up work from Sullivan and Custer.
Custer then opened her season scoring account midway through the
55th minute, dropping it off for Rich and one-touching the back end
of the give-and-go into the back of the net to push the margin to
5-0. Santerre capped her hat trick early in the 59th minute, taking
a cross from Rich and slotting a neat finish inside the far post
for her sixth goal of the season. Young added the final tally
midway through the 79th minute when her shot caromed into the net
off the crossbar following a wonderful lead ball from Kerrigan.
Lees-McRae returns to the pitch on Wednesday night when the Lady
Bobcats travel to Black Mountain, N.C. for a non-conference matchup
with Montreat College. The match is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at Owen
High School.
