RALEIGH, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae College
softball team split with Meredith College in a doubleheader on
Saturday. Lindsey Huntsinger (Asheville, N.C.) continued her hot
streak to open the season, going 3-for-4 on the day with three
singles and three runs scored to help pace the Lady Bobcats (5-3).
Magen West (Whitney, Texas) pitched five strong innings, allowing
two hits to lead Lees-McRae to a 4-0 victory in game two.
Game One: Meredith 3, Lees-McRae 2
The Bobcats got on the board quickly when Paige Coleman
(Thomasville, N.C.) drove in Huntsinger following a two-out walk.
The Avenging Angels (1-1) closed the inning, and were unable to
plate a run in the home half of the inning, leaving Lees-McRae on
top 1-0 heading to the second.
Following a walk to Kayla Blackburn (Millers Creek, N.C.),
Arielle Stout (Siler City, N.C.) struck out the side to close the
top of the second. The Angels worked quickly to tie the contest at
1-1 in the bottom of the inning, but the Bobcats struck again in
the top of the third, when Huntsinger reached first on a two-out
single, and Coleman again drove her home to retake the advantage at
2-1.
The contest stayed locked at 2-1 until the bottom of the fourth
inning, when Rebecca Leigh (High Point, N.C.) battled on with a
walk, and moved to second on an error, scoring on an Ashley Green
(Asheville, N.C.) double to knot the tally at 2-2. The Angels
added the game winner in the bottom of the seventh inning, when
Emily Cooke (Ahoskie, N.C.) crossed the plate to earn the 3-2
victory.
Laurel Gregg (Mars Hill, N.C.) worked seven innings, allowing
four hits and three runs, only one of which was earned in the
loss.
Game Two: Lees-McRae 4, Meredith 0
In the second contest of the twin-bill, West took the circle and
fired a gem to lead the Bobcats to the victory. The contest
remained tight until the top half of the third frame, when Karli
Robb (Hayes, Va.) doubled to ignite a two-out rally, scoring on a
Huntsinger single. Coleman laced a single to the grass to drive
Huntsinger home to give the Bobcats the 2-0 advantage.
The Bobcats plated two more in the visitor half of the fourth.
Blackburn opened the inning with a base-hit, and scored when Robb
lined a single into right field. Huntsinger picked up her third
one-bagger of the day, moving Robb to third, and Coleman tallied
her fourth RBI of the doubleheader, scoring Robb on a ground-out to
second.
West closed the door over the next two frames, with Hollie
Crickenberger (Boydton, Va.) closing the contest out, giving up one
hit in two innings of work. The Bobcats move to 5-3 on the season,
continuing the road trip on Sunday, traveling to Mount Olive for a
doubleheader. Game time is slated for 1:00 p.m. in Mount Olive,
