HARTSVILLE, S.C. --- The Lees-McRae College
men's tennis team swept Coker College, 9-0, in Conference Carolinas
play on Tuesday afternoon behind dominating performances by several
Bobcats, including Pedro de Sousa Nunes (Florianopolis, Santa
Catarina, Brazil), who did not surrender a game in singles
action.
Lees-McRae's (2-3, 2-0 CC) Alexander Hayes (Mexico City, Mexico)
and Skylar Warren (Asheville, N.C.) opened doubles play with an 8-5
victory over Coker's (2-3, 1-1 CC) James Corfield (Auckland, New
Zealand) and Guillermo Aylou (Zaragoza, Spain), while Nandor
Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary) and Callum Loveridge (Ashbourne,
England) defeated Manel Soler (Barcelona, Spain) and Juan
Vallejo-Gonzalez (Quito, Ecuador) by an 8-2 margin in the second
pairing of the afternoon. Nunes and Travis VanHoy (Olin, N.C.) then
tallied an 8-2 win over Evan Schreiner (Seneca, S.C.) and Tycho
Lamberigts (Netherlands) to give the Bobcats an early 3-0 lead.
Solymosi kicked off singles play with his third consecutive solo
victory, defeating Corfield in straight sets by scores of 7-5 and
6-3. VanHoy followed with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Aylou to clinch the
team victory, as Hayes defeated Soler 6-4, 6-3. Nunes then
delivered perhaps the performance of the day, defeating Schreiner
6-0, 6-0, while Jacob Darling (Katikati, New Zealand) won his No. 5
matchup with Vallejo-Gonzalez by scores of 6-1 and 6-4. Loveridge
wrapped up the afternoon with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Lamberigts.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Saturday when the Bobcats travel
to Elon, N.C. to take on NCAA Division I Elon University in a 10
a.m. matchup.
