CHARLOTTE, N.C. --- The Queens University of
Charlotte men's lacrosse team outscored Lees-McRae College by a 9-4
margin in the first half, and held on for a 12-6 victory in
Conference Carolinas play on Saturday behind a four-goal
performance by Corey Geroy (Horseheads, N.Y.).
Queens (1-1, 1-0 CC) outshot the Bobcats (0-3, 0-2 CC) by a
27-19 margin on the day, including a 21-10 edge in the first half,
while winning 13-of-21 face-offs and holding a 30-21 advantage in
ground balls. Geroy paced the Royals with four goals, as Alex
Warehime (Millersville, Md.) and Matthew Michael (Easton, Pa.) each
posted two scores. Michael also added a pair of assists for Queens
as Brandon Macknew (Abington, Md.) and Rob Bacharach (Baltimore,
Md.) tallied eight and five saves, respectively, in net for the
Royals.
Derin Vacca (Wake Forest, N.C.) led the way for Lees-McRae with
two goals, while Kyle Ficken (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and Ryan
LeBlanc (Naples, Fla.) each tallied an assist. LeBlanc also added a
goal, as Landon Guntman (Temecula, Calif.), Josh Shingleton
(Temecula, Calif.) and Brett Yusiewicz (Chapel Hill, N.C.) each
found the back of the net for the Bobcats. Vacca posted a 5-for-6
day in the center X, while also tallying a team-high four ground
balls. Mike Fahey (Buffalo, N.Y.) played the full 60 minutes in net
for Lees-McRae, posting 15 saves.
After Queens took an early 2-0 lead and Vacca added his first of
the game to cut the margin to 2-1, Warehime and Michael netted
back-to-back scores on the power play to give the Royals a 4-1
advantage. The Royals tallied another goal late in the first
quarter and added two more early in the second to push the margin
to 7-1 before Lees-McRae responded, scoring three of the next four
goals to cut the lead to 8-4 on Vacca's second of the contest.
Geroy answered with his third of the game just before halftime,
completing his hat trick despite his team playing shorthanded to
send Queens into the intermission with a 9-4 advantage. Queens put
the game out of reach in the third quarter, outscoring the Bobcats
by a 3-0 margin in the period to carry a 12-4 advantage into the
fourth. The Bobcats added a pair of tallies midway through the
fourth quarter to equal the final margin of 12-6.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Wednesday when the Bobcats
travel to Hickory, N.C. to take on Lenoir-Rhyne University at 7
p.m.
