HICKORY, N.C. --- The Lenoir-Rhyne University
men's lacrosse team countered a seven-goal surge by Lees-McRae
College with four straight tallies en route to a 14-11 win in
non-conference play on Wednesday night.
Lees-McRae (0-4) edged Lenoir-Rhyne (1-3) by a 41-38 margin in
shots, while posting 19 face-off wins in 29 attempts. The Bears
also recorded a 39-24 advantage in ground balls on the night.
Landon Guntman (Temecula, Calif.) recorded a game-high five
goals for the Bobcats, including a trio of tallies early in the
first half that cut the L-R lead to 3-2 in the opening minute of
the second period. Josh Shingleton (Temecula, Calif.) added four
goals for Lees-McRae, as Kyle Ficken (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) tallied
a pair of scores. Derrin Vacca (Wake Forest, N.C.) and Nathan
Hammer (Cary, N.C.) posted three and two assists, respectively, as
Vacca went 15-4 in the center X. Mike Fahey (Buffalo, N.Y.) tallied
11 saves for the Bobcats.
Lenoir-Rhyne's Levi Capron (Weddington, N.C.) paced the Bears
with four goals, while Robert Darrow (Fort Myers, Fla.), Tyler
Kotch (Butler, Pa.), Sam Ashton (New Market, Md.), and Anthony
Mangili (Durham, N.C.) each tallied two scores. Darrow added a
team-high three assists, as Ashton, Kotch, and Fred Waddle
(Colorado Springs, Colo.) each posted a pair of helpers. Patrick
Stasio (Williamsville, N.Y.) posted a game-high 15 saves for the
Bears.
The Bears opened the game with a three-goal spurt in the first
period, taking a 3-0 lead on Waddle's first tally of the contest at
the 3:06 mark before Guntman answered for the Bobcats, netting a
pair of scores to cut the margin to 3-2. Lenoir-Rhyne responded
with a 5-0 spurt of its own, stretching the lead to 8-2 on a Kotch
tally with 3:32 left in the second.
Lees-McRae answered with seven straight goals, a run
kick-started by Guntman's third tally of the game just before
halftime. Shingleton caught fire early in the second half, scoring
each of his four goals within an eight minute span in the third
quarter to tie the score at 8-8. Guntman gave the Bobcats their
first lead of the game at the 5:09 mark of the third period,
finding the back of the net off a Hammer assist to give LMC a 9-8
advantage.
Lenoir-Rhyne responded with a pair of goals to retake the lead
at 10-9, and after Guntman evened the score at 10-10 with his fifth
tally of the contest at the 14:13 mark of the fourth quarter. The
Bears answered once again, netting four straight goals to claim a
14-10 advantage before Ficken capped the night's scoring for LMC
with his third tally of the season with 2:01 left on the clock.
Lees-McRae returns to action next Monday when the Bobcats host
Lake Erie College at 4 p.m. on Tate Field.
