MARS HILL, N.C. --- Taylor Morris (Weddington,
N.C.) clubbed a three-run, walk-off home run in the bottom of the
seventh to lead Mars Hill College to a 4-2 come-from-behind win
over Lees-McRae College in the first game of an abbreviated
doubleheader on Sunday afternoon.
Mars Hill (11-5) outhit the Bobcats (6-9) by a 12-6 margin in
the first game of a rain-shortened doubleheader, including a
4-for-4 performance from sophomore Amanda McArthur (Charlotte,
N.C.), as Ashley McCurry (Asheville, N.C.), Shaundee Woosley
(Lexington, N.C.), and Jade Bullins (Danbury, N.C.) each tallied
two hits.
Morris posted a trio of RBI, as McCurry scored two runs for the
Lions. Tara West (Urbana, Ohio) (5-1) went the distance for the
Lions in the circle, allowing two runs on six hits and striking out
four to earn the victory.
Anna Carter (Hurdle Mills, N.C.) and Alison Armstrong
(Bellingham, Mass.) each posted a pair of base knocks for the
Bobcats, while Carter drove in a pair of runs with her second home
run of the season. Laurel Gregg (Mars Hill, N.C.) (2-6) got the nod
for the Bobcats, allowing four runs in six and two-thirds
innings.
Mars Hill opened the scoring in the bottom of the first, taking
an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Natalie Haithcox (Asheboro,
N.C.) that scored McCurry from second. The Lions held the lead
until the top of the seventh inning, when Kim Coley (Marion, N.C.)
laced a leadoff single to left center and Carter followed with a
two-run shot over the wall in left to give Lees-McRae a 2-1
advantage.
McArthur started the rally in the bottom of the inning, stroking
a leadoff double to the gap in left center. After McCurry drew a
walk and Ashley Seawell (Asheboro, N.C.) sacrificed the runners to
second and third, Morris delivered the deciding tally, launching
her third home run of the season to left to give Mars Hill the
walk-off win.
Lees-McRae returns to the diamond on Saturday, Mar. 5 when the
Bobcats travel to Due West, S.C. to resume their Conference
Carolinas schedule with a 1 p.m. doubleheader against Erskine
College.
