KISSIMMEE, Fla. --- The Lees-McRae softball
team began their fourth day at the Rebel Spring Games in with a
strong showing against the Scots of Edinboro University. The
Bobcats (11-11) scored two final runs in the sixth inning to beat
the Fighting Scots (5-4) with a final score of 6-2.
The Bobcats (11-11) had nine hits from seven different players.
Seniors Paige Coleman (Thomasville, N.C.) and Meagan Knowles (West
Palm Beach, Fla.) led the team, both going 2-for-3 at the
plate.
After a quick first half inning for the Scots, the Bobcats were
able to score one run with two hits in the bottom of the frame to
take an early 1-0 lead. Kierstie Moon (Oxford, Ga.) knocked a
single to center field to lead off the game, and moved to second on
a sacrifice bunt from Karli Robb (Hayes, Va.). Moon was then able
to steal third before scoring when Coleman dropped a single into
right field.
Edinboro answered in the top of the second inning as Ashley
Black (Waterford, Penn.), who led off the inning with a walk, came
around to score when Jade Thrower (Saxonburg, Penn.) laced a double
to left center. After advancing to third on a passed ball, Thrower
crossed the plate on a Bobcat error score the Scots' second run of
the inning. Bobcat pitcher Laurel Gregg (Mars Hill, N.C.) then
quieted Edinboro's rally, leaving two Scot's stranded on base.
The Bobcats were trailing 2-1 in the bottom of the third, when
Lindsey Huntsinger (Asheville, N.C.) laced a one-out single to left
center. Huntsinger then advanced to third on a double by Coleman,
leaving runners at second and third for junior Kim Coley (Marion,
N.C.). Coley laid down a sacrifice bunt in an attempted squeeze
play, but Huntsinger was thrown out at home.
Anna Carter then doubled to left field, plating both Coleman and
Coley, to put the Bobcats up 3-2. An error by the Edinboro second
baseman allowed the third run of the inning to score, giving the
Bobcats a 4-2 lead heading into the fourth.
The Scots offense stayed quiet for the remainder of the game,
while Lees-McRae was able to strike once more in the bottom of the
sixth, when Knowles singled to center field scoring both Alison
Armstrong (Bellingham, Mass.) and Lori Fulmer (Prosperity, S.C.) to
equal the final margin of 6-2.
Bryce Campbell (Lynchburg, Va.) and Gregg combined for the full
seven innings, giving up eight hits and only one earned run. The
Bobcats wrap up their stint at the Rebel Games with two games on
Saturday morning against St. Cloud State University and Concordia
University at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m., respectively.
