SALISBURY, N.C. --- The Catawba College Indians
posted a combined 24 hits and 20 runs in a doubleheader sweep of
Lees-McRae College in non-conference action on Wednesday afternoon,
edging the Bobcats by a score of 6-2 in game one before registering
a 14-2 five-inning victory in the nightcap.
Catawba (16-10) held the Bobcats (11-16) to four runs and nine
hits on the day, as Paige Coleman (Thomasville, N.C.) and Kim Coley
(Marion, N.C.) led the Bobcats at the plate with two base knocks
each. Bryce Campbell (Lynchburg, Va.), Lindsey Huntsinger
(Asheville, N.C.), and Conference Carolinas Player of the Week Kim
Coley (Marion, N.C.) each launched a solo home run during the
double header.
Game 1: Catawba 6, Lees-McRae 2 - Box Score
The Bobcats opened the scoring in the top of the fourth, taking
a 1-0 lead with a four-hit frame. Huntsinger reached on an error to
kick-start the inning, moving to second on a one-out single to left
by Coleman before Coley dropped a base knock into right to load the
bases with one down. Anna Carter (Hurdle Mills, N.C.) took
advantage, stroking an RBI single into left to plate Huntsinger and
give the Bobcats a one-run lead.
The Indians answered in the bottom of the inning, as right
fielder Khourtni Hester (Waldorf, Md.) hit a solo homerun to left
field to tie the score at 1-1. Catawba added five more runs in the
frame on four hits to take a 6-1 advantage. Coley cut into the
Catawba lead in the top of the sixth, launching a solo home run
over the fence in left to trim the margin to 6-2.
The four-bagger proved to be the last run of the contest for
either team, as Catawba came away with a 6-2 victory. Laurel Gregg
(Mars Hill, N.C.) held Catawba hitless through the first three
innings, surrendering six runs on six hits in the contest. Bryce
Campbell (Lynchburg, Va.) pitched the final inning, allowing no
runs on one hit.
Game 2: Catawba 14, Lees-McRae 2 (5 innings) - Box Score
Lees-McRae struck first in game two as well, taking an early 1-0
lead in the top of the first when Huntsinger launched her seventh
home run of the season over the fence in center for a solo shot.
Catawba responded in the bottom of the frame, plating 11 runs on
nine hits to take an 11-1 lead going into the top of the second,
with the final four tallies coming via a grand slam by Hester.
After Catawba scored three more runs in the bottom of the
fourth, Lees-McRae posted the final tally of the day in the fifth,
equaling the final margin of 14-2 on a solo shot by Campbell over
the wall in right center. Magen West (Whitney, Texas) tossed the
first two innings for the Bobcats, before Hollie Crickenberger
(Boydton, Va.) pitched the final two frames, allowing three
unearned runs and striking out two.
Lees-McRae returns to the diamond on Thursday when the Bobcats
host King College (Tenn.) in their home-opener at the Bobcat
Softball Field. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m.
