    BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lake Erie College
men's lacrosse team outscored Lees-McRae College by a 9-3 margin in
the second and third quarters en route to a 14-9 win on Monday
evening at Tate Field.
Lake Erie (1-1) edged the Bobcats (0-5) by a 14-11 margin in
face-off wins, and held a 31-21 advantage in ground balls, as
Lees-McRae outshot the Storm 44-37 on the day. Lees-McRae's Danny
Ives (Cheadle, Cheshire, England) notched a hat trick with three
goals, while Kyle Ficken (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) added wo scores and
one assist to pace the Bobcats. Ives also joined Ficken, Josh
Shingleton (Temecula, Calif.), and Nathan Hammer (Cary, N.C.) with
one assist each.
Keegan Bal (Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada) led the way for
Lake Erie with a game-high four goals, while Josh Becker
(Salamanca, N.Y.) added a hat trick and Kyle Larsen (Massillon,
Ohio) and MacGregor Johnston (Nanaimo, British Columbia, Canada)
each chipped in a pair of tallies. Winston John (Salamanca, N.Y.),
Joeyjohn French (Tully, N.Y.), Joe Kudla (Harleysville, Pa.), and
Trevor Tate (Amherstburg, Ontario, Canada) each added an assist for
the Storm.
Lees-McRae opened the scoring just eight seconds into the game,
taking an early 1-0 lead on Sean yan's (Cary, N.C.) first career
goal. The teams would trade goals over the course of the first
period, with Bal evening the score at 2-2 with his first of the day
at the 2:34 mark. Ives answered in the waning seconds of the
period, finding the back of the net off a Shingleton pass with just
one tick left on the clock to give the Bobcats a 3-2 advantage.
Ives added his second of the game six minutes into the second
quarter, giving the Bobcats a 4-2 lead off a nifty pass from Hammer
at the 9:07 mark. Lake Erie responded with a four-goal surge,
claiming a 6-4 lead on Becker's first goal of the day with 6:23
left in the period. After Shingleton cut the margin to 6-5 at the
4:22 mark, the Storm's Matthew Curcio (Lancaster, Pa.) made a
terrific run down the seam and tallied the shorthanded goal to send
Lake Erie into the intermission with a 7-5 advantage.
The Bobcats answered midway through the third quarter, cutting
the lead to 7-6 on Bretty Yusiewicz's (Chapel Hill, N.C.) second
goal of the campaign before Lake Erie answered, scoring four
straight goals to claim an 11-6 advantage on Bal's third of the
day.
Lees-McRae fought back in the early moments of the fourth,
netting a pair of quick goals to cut the margin to 11-8 on Ficken's
power play strike at the 13:45 mark. Lake Erie would answer once
again, scoring three goals in a two and a half minute span to push
the lead to 14-8 and clinch the victory.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Friday when the Bobcats travel
to Bethesda, Md. to take on fourth-ranked Le Moyne College in a
neutral site game on the campus of Essex Community College at
noon.
