WILSON, N.C. --- The No. 22 Lees-McRae College
men's tennis team won the final three matches in singles play en
route to a 6-3 win over Barton College in Conference Carolinas play
on Tuesday afternoon.
Barton's (9-4, 2-2 CC) Cesar Grobel and Gabriel Araujo opened
the afternoon with an 8-4 win over Lees-McRae's (5-6, 4-0 CC)
Alexander Hayes (Mexico City, Mexico) and Skylar Warren (Asheville,
N.C.) before Travis VanHoy (Olin, N.C.) and Pedro De Sousa Nunes
(Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil) evened the tally with an
8-6 victory against Diego Salinas and Renato Mendes. Nandor
Solymosi (Drebecen, Hungary) and Callum Loveridge (Ashbourne,
England) then posted an 8-5 win over Pier-Alexandre Desilets and
Leandro Peron in the third flight.
Grobel pulled the Bulldogs level at 2-2 with a 6-1, 6-3 victory
over Solymosi in the first singles flight before VanHoy defeated
Araujo, 6-1, 6-1 in the second pairing. Desilets edged Hayes, 7-6
(7-5), 6-2 in the third flight to even the score at 3-3 before the
Bobcats tallied the final three points of the day.
Nunes started the run with a 6-2, 6-3 win over Mendes in the
fourth flight, before Graham Battle (Boone, N.C.) rallied for a 6-7
(3-7), 6-3, 11-9 victory over Salinas to tally the deciding point.
Loveridge then closed out the day with a 6-3, 6-2 win over
Peron.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Sunday when the Bobcats host
Queens University of Charlotte to continue their conference slate
at 1 p.m.
