MARS HILL, N.C. --- The Mars Hill College men's
lacrosse team tallied six straight goals en route to a 14-6 victory
over Lees-McRae College on Wednesday evening, outscoring the
Bobcats by a 10-4 margin in the first half in a non-conference
matchup.
Mars Hill (6-3) outshot the Bobcats (0-7) by a 47-26 margin on
the day, including a 32-18 advantage in shots on target, while
edging Lees-McRae by a 39-30 tally in ground balls. Tim Burns paced
the Lions with a game-high four goals, while Tyler Farmer and Eric
Benesch each posted a hat trick. T.J. Cowx added three assists, as
Kile Garrett tallied a pair of helpers. Dylan Price allowed five
goals in 55 minutes of play between the pipes while making 12
saves.
Danny Ives (Cheadle, Cheshire, England) led the Bobcats with his
second hat trick of the season, as Kyle Ficken (Brooklyn Park,
Minn.), Brett Yusiewicz (Chapel Hill, N.C.) and Jon Bastel
(Raleigh, N.C.) each tallied a goal. Derrin Vacca (Wake Forest,
N.C.) added two assists and went 9-for-12 in the center-x, while
Andy Nesdill (Phoenix, Ariz.) recorded 18 saves between the
pipes.
Mars Hill took an early advantage with two goals in the first
four minutes before the Bobcats responded, evening the score at 2-2
with a pair of tallies within a 45-second span, eliminating the
lead on Ficken's sixth goal of the season at the 8:51 mark of the
first period. After Cowx gave the Lions the lead and Bastel
answered for the Bobcats on the man advantage, Benesch scored with
seven ticks left on the clock to send MHC into the second period
with a 4-3 lead.
Burns opened the second with his first of the game at the 13:29
mark, and after Ives answered with 11:46 left on the clock, the
Lions tallied six straight goals to claim an 11-4 advantage early
in the third quarter. Ives responded with his second of the game at
the 11:43 mark, and capped the afternoon's scoring to complete his
hat trick with 2:17 left on the clock.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Saturday when the Bobcats host
Wingate University at 2 p.m. on Tate Field.
