KISSIMMEE, Fla. --- The Northwood (Mich.)
University softball team utilized a four-run third inning to scrape
past the Lees-McRae College Bobcats by a score of 4-1 in
non-conference action on Tuesday at the Rebel Spring Games. Megan
Eddy (Merrill, Mich.) earned the win for the Timberwolves (3-4),
hurling four shut-out innings and allowing just one hit in the
outing.
The Bobcats (7-11) battled tough, with Laurel Gregg (Mars Hill,
N.C.) giving up four runs on five hits, with three scoreless
innings for Lees-McRae. Kim Coley (Marion, N.C.) paced the Bobcats
with a 3-for-3 day, while Paige Coleman (Thomasville, N.C.) added
two hits.
The lone Bobcat run came when Coley laced a single into left
field to plate Lindsey Huntsinger (Asheville, N.C.) to cut into the
advantage in the top half of the fourth inning, but the Bobcats
were unable to creep any closer.
The contest started quickly for the Bobcats when Kierstie Moon
(Oxford, Ga.) singling to left field and advancing to second on a
Karli Robb (Hayes, Va.) sacrifice bunt. Coleman then lined a
single to right field, but Moon was gunned out at the plate on a
close call at the plate to keep the Bobcats off the board.
In the second inning, Coley repeated Moon's first inning
performance, singling to right to open the inning and moving to
second on an Anna Carter (Hurdle Mills, N.C.) sacrifice bunt.
Coley moved to third on a passed ball with Alison Armstrong
(Bellingham, Mass.) at the plate. Armstrong knuckled a ball to
second and Coley was called out at the plate on a close play
keeping the contest scoreless.
The Timberwolves struck first with a four-hit, four run inning
in the third to take a 4-0 lead before Coley drove in Huntsinger in
the fourth to cut the advantage to three.
Eddy entered the game following Coley's knock, and closed out
the game giving up just one hit in four innings of work. The loss
dropped the Bobcats to 7-11 on the year and 1-2 during the Rebel
Spring Games.
