SUMTER, S.C. --- The No. 28 and third-seeded
Lees-McRae College men's tennis team swept doubles play and posted
two wins in singles play to record a 5-0 victory over sixth-seeded
Barton College in the quarterfinal round of the Conference
Carolinas Tournament.
Lees-McRae's (8-8) top flight duo of Nandor Solymosi (Drebecen,
Hungary) and Travis VanHoy (Olin, N.C.) opened the day with an 8-5
win over Barton's (10-10) tandem of Cesar Grobel and Gabriel
Araujo, before Pedro De Sousa Nunes (Florianopolis, Santa Catarina,
Brazil) and Graham Battle (Boone, N.C.) registered a 9-7 victory
over Diego Salinas and Renato Mendes. Alexander Hayes (Mexico City,
Mexico) and Callum Loveridge (Ashbourne, England) then defeated
Leandro Peron and Pier-Alexandre Desilets by a score of 8-1 to give
the Bobcats a 3-0 lead.
Nunes opened singles play with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Mendes in the
fourth flight to give the Bobcats a 4-0 advantage, before Battle
notched a 6-0, 4-6, 6-1 victory against Peron at No. 6 singles to
register the deciding point for Lees-McRae.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Saturday when the Bobcats
take on second-seeded Limestone College at 9 a.m. at the Palmetto
Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.
