BOONE, N.C. --- The Belmont Abbey College men's
lacrosse team outscored Lees-McRae College by an 11-2 margin in the
second half en route to a 16-6 win over the Bobcats on a chilly
afternoon on the campus of Watauga High School in Conference
Carolinas play.
Belmont Abbey (5-5, 2-3 CC) outshot the Bobcats (0-9, 0-3 CC) by
a 49-26 margin, while holding a 13-10 advantage in face-off wins
and edging Lees-McRae 31-27 in ground balls. Scotty Steele paced
the Abbey with four goals on six shots, as Tanner Scharr and Ryan
Corrigan each posted a hat trick and an assist. Nick Boylan, Dan
Morrissey, Brendan Rogers, and Brian Watson each tallied a goal and
an assist, while Tony Kikola made four saves through the first
three quarters between the pipes to pick up the win. Merrick
Reiland also tallied six stops in the fourth quarter for the
Abbey.
Michael LaSalle (Londonderry, N.H.) opened his scoring account
for the campaign with two goals to pace the Bobcats, while Kyle
Judge (Hampstead, Md.) and Danny Ives (Cheadle, Cheshire, England)
equaled LaSalle's total with a pair of tallies each. Judge, Derrin
Vacca (Wake Forest, N.C.), and Brett Yusiewicz (Chapel Hill, N.C.)
each posted an assist for the Bobcats, while Mike Fahey (Buffalo,
N.Y.) tallied 19 saves between the pipes for the Bobcats.
The Bobcats opened the scoring midway through the first quarter,
taking an early 1-0 lead on Ives' first goal of the game at the
8:03 mark for the lone tally of the period. Steele answered for the
Abbey less than two minutes into the second, evening the tally at
1-1 on the man advantage. Ives responded with a power play goal of
his own less than a minute later, giving the Bobcats a 2-1
advantage at the 12:16 mark.
Steele countered for the Abbey once again at the 11:59 mark,
tallying his second goal of the contest to even the tally at 2-2.
LaSalle and Judge responded with a goal each over the next six
minutes as Judge gave the Bobcats a 4-2 lead at the 5:41 mark.
Morrissey answered three and a half minutes later, scoring the
first of three Crusader goals in the final 2:10 of the period as
Belmont Abbey surged to a 5-4 lead at the intermission on a goal by
Corrigan with 59 ticks left in the half.
Corrigan pushed the lead to 6-4 with a man advantage goal three
and a half minutes into the third quarter, kick-starting a 6-1
period in favor of Belmont Abbey that stretched the margin to 11-5
after Judge capped the quarter with his second of the game at the
1:13 mark.
The Abbey put the game out of reach in the opening eight minutes
of the fourth, pushing the lead to 12-5 on a goal by Boylan just
over a minute into the quarter before LaSalle answered at the 11:30
mark for the Bobcats. Belmont Abbey then closed out the game with
four goals over the final nine minutes, including a pair from
Steele midway through the quarter.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Saturday, April 9 when the
Bobcats host St. Andrews Presbyterian College in a conference
matchup at 2 p.m. on Tate Field.
