NEWBERRY, S.C. --- The Newberry College men's
tennis team swept doubles play and registered four wins in singles
action en route to a 7-2 victory over Lees-McRae College in
non-conference play on Monday afternoon.
Newberry's (3-4) duo of Michael Saunders and Vinicius Botelho
opened doubles play with an 8-1 win over Lees-McRae's (0-3) Pedro
De Sousa Nunes (Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil) and Skylar
Warren (Asheville, N.C.).
Cal Loveridge and Mohammed Chakir edged Alexander Hayes (Mexico
City, Mexico) and Marcelo Tatai (Sao Paulo, Brazil) by a tally of
8-6 in the second flight, as David Sons and Carlos Nicolopulos then
defeated Graham Battle (Boone, N.C.) and Hang Lak Choi (Newton,
N.C.), 9-8, to give the Wolves a 3-0 lead.
Saunders kicked off singles play with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Hayes,
before Botelho defeated Nunes, 6-4, 6-0 in the second flight.
Warren won the third flight when Chakir was forced to retire with
the match knotted at 6-6 in the tiebreak.
Loveridge edged Battle in the fourth flight, 6-4, 6-5, before
Tatai registered a hard-fought 6-3, 2-6, 10-6 victory against Sons
at No. 5 singles. Nicolopulos wrapped up the afternoon with a 6-1,
7-5 win against Choi in the final singles flight.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Saturday when the Bobcats
travel to Due West, S.C. to open Conference Carolinas play with a 1
p.m. match against Erskine College.
