ROME, Ga. --- The Shorter University men's
lacrosse team outscored Lees-McRae College by a 6-2 margin in the
first quarter, and Matt Kristiansen paced the Hawks with six goals
en route to a 14-10 victory on Friday night in non-conference
action.
Shorter (2-2) outshot Lees-McRae (1-4) by a 57-37 margin,
including a 29-17 advantage in the first half, as the Bobcats held
a 14-10 edge in face-off victories on the night. Shorter won the
ground ball battle by a 47-41 spread, including a 17-7 advantage in
the first quarter, while converting 9-of-11 clear attempts.
Danny Ives (Cheadle, Cheshire, England) paced the Bobcats with
five goals and one assist, as Derin Vacca (Wake Forest, N.C.) added
a hat trick and a helper. Vacca also posted a team-high eight
ground balls, as Josh Shingleton (Temecula, Calif.) and Brett
Yusiewicz (Chapel Hill, N.C.) each added a goal and an assist. Ryan
Harrison (Lake Mary, Fla.) made 19 saves between the pipes for the
Bobcats.
Kristiansen paced the Hawks with a game-high six goals, adding
two assists and seven ground balls, as Michael Matthews chipped in
two goals and a contest-best three helpers. Jordan Butz added a
game-high nine ground balls, while winning 7-of-15 face-offs. Erik
Carson made 15 saves between the pipes for the Hawks, as Ben Janes
added three goals.
The Bobcats jumped out to an early 2-0 lead on goals by Vacca
and Shingleton before the Hawks answered with six tallies, putting
six shots in the back of the net over the final eight and a half
minutes of the first quarter to take a 6-2 advantage. After Shorter
pushed the lead to 8-2 early in the second, Ives followed a
Yusiewicz strike with three goals of his own to trim the margin to
8-6 with 4:31 to play in the period. Kristiansen added a late
strike to give the Hawks a 9-6 lead going into the
intermission.
After the teams traded goals in the third, Shorter opened the
fourth quarter with a trio of quick strikes to push the margin to
13-7 with 10:27 remaining in the game. The Bobcats answered with a
trio of goals, including a pair of Ives strikes to cut the lead to
13-10 before Janes capped the evening's scoring for Shorter with a
late goal at the 1:32 mark.
Lees-McRae returns to action on Saturday when the Bobcats take
on Lindenwood University on the Shorter campus at 11 a.m.
