BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. --- The Gardner-Webb
University men's tennis team posted a 7-0 win over Lees-McRae
College on Wednesday afternoon, sweeping singles and doubles play
in the Bobcats' season opener.
Gardner-Webb's duo of Ernest Alberch and Joao Poli opened
doubles play with an 8-4 win over Alexander Hayes (Mexico City,
Mexico) and Pedro De Sousa Nunes (Florianopolis, Santa Catarina,
Brazil), as Stephen Martin and Roman Piftor posted an 8-3 victory
in the No. 2 slot against Skylar Warren (Asheville, N.C.) and
Graham Battle (Boone, N.C.). Brendan Dempsey and Blake Dunlap added
an 8-3 win against Marcelo Tatai (Sao Paulo, Brazil) and Hang Lak
Choi (Newton, N.C.) at the No. 3 doubles position.
Korhan Ates gave the Runnin' Bulldogs a 2-0 advantage with a
6-0, 6-2 win over Hayes in the No. 1 singles matchup, as Adam
Knutsson-Sundblad defeated Nunes in the second singles flight, 6-4,
6-1. Alberch defeated Warren by a tally of 6-2, 6-1, as Piftor took
a 6-0, 6-3 win over Battle at No. 4. Dempsey won the No. 5 singles
matchup by a tally of 6-0, 6-0 against Tatai, as Matthew Parker
defeated Choi in the final singles flight, 6-3, 6-0.
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Saturday, February 18 when
the Bobcats travel to Mars Hill, N.C. to take on Mars Hill College
at 1 p.m.
