BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lincoln Memorial
University men's tennis team registered a 5-2 victory over
Lees-McRae College in a rain-shortened non-conference match on
Thursday afternoon.
Lees-McRae's (1-7) duo of Alexander Hayes (Mexico City, Mexico)
and Skylar Warren (Asheville, N.C.) opened the afternoon with an
8-5 win over Lincoln Memorial's (7-2) tandem of Phillip Hoffmann
and Tom Goossens, before LMU's pairing of Will Sparks and Marcelo
Alvim defeated Houston Callaway (Thurmond, N.C.) and Marcelo Tatai
(Sao Paulo, Brazil), 9-8 (7-6). Michael Koenen and Alexey Minevskiy
posted a hard-fought 9-7 win over Graham Battle (Boone, N.C.) and
Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.) at No. 3 doubles.
Hoffman gave LMU a 3-1 lead with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Hayes at
No. 1 singles, before Sparks defeated Warren, 6-4, 6-3 in the
second flight. Battle answered with a hard-fought 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 win
over Alvim, as Minevskiy posted a 6-1, 6-1 victory against Tatai at
No. 4 singles. Goossens and Koenen each held a one-set-to-none lead
in the fifth and sixth singles flights when play was halted.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Tuesday, March 20 when the
Bobcats host North Greenville University in Conference Carolinas
play at 2 p.m.
