BRISTOL, Tenn. --- The King College men's
tennis team won two of three doubles matches and split singles play
on Wednesday afternoon to edge Lees-McRae College by a 5-4 margin
in Conference Carolinas action.
Lees-McRae's (1-9, 1-4 CC) duo of Alexander Hayes (Mexico City,
Mexico) and Skylar Warren (Asheville, N.C.) opened the afternoon
with a hard-fought 8-6 victory over King's (10-0, 4-0 CC) tandem of
Jose Avila and Pablo Vidal, before Leo Brigato and Vitor Villar
responded with an 8-4 win against Pedro De Sousa Nunes
(Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil) and Marcelo Tatai (Sao
Paulo, Brazil) for King. Seth Hale and Patrick Jones wrapped up
doubles play with an 8-1 decision against Graham Battle (Boone,
N.C.) and Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.).
Avila gave the Tornado a 3-1 advantage with a 6-1, 6-3 victory
against Nunes at No. 1 singles, before Lees-McRae answered with
wins in the second, third and fourth flights to take a 4-3 lead.
Hayes defeated Vidal, 7-6, 6-3 in the second flight, as Warren
rallied for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory against Villar at No. 3. Battle
defeated Brigato, 6-4, 6-1 at No. 4 singles, as Jones posted a 6-4,
6-1 win over Tatai in the fifth flight to even the tally at 4-4.
Hale then gave the Tornado the deciding point with a 7-5, 7-5 win
over Choi.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Friday, March 30 when the
Bobcats host Mount Olive College in a conference matchup at 2
p.m.
