LINVILLE, N.C. --- The Coker College men's
tennis team registered four victories in singles play to rally for
a 5-4 win over Lees-McRae College on Sunday afternoon in Conference
Carolinas play at Grandfather Mountain Country Club.
Lees-McRae's (1-5, 1-1 CC) duo of Pedro De Sousa Nunes
(Florianopolis, Santa Catarina, Brazil) and Skylar Warren
(Asheville, N.C.) opened play with an 8-4 win over Coker's (4-4,
2-1 CC) pairing of Leonardo Lima and Manel Estruga at No. 1
doubles, before the Cobras' James Corfield and Guillermo Aylon
defeated Alexander Hayes (Mexico City, Mexico) and Marcelo Tatai
(Sao Paulo, Brazil) by a score of 9-8 (7-5) to even the match.
Graham Battle (Boone, N.C.) and Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.)
gave the Bobcats a 2-1 lead with an 8-4 win against Billy Simpson
and Ricardo Perez before Lima evened the tally again with a 6-2,
6-1 victory against Nunes in the first singles flight. Hayes gave
LMC a 3-2 advantage with a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 6-4 win against
Corfield, as Estruga defeated Warren, 6-1, 6-3 in the third singles
flight.
Aylon registered a 4-6, 6-0, 6-2 win over Battle at No. 4
singles to give the Cobras a 4-3 lead, as Tatai defeated Simpson,
6-3, 6-4 in the fifth singles flight. Perez capped the day with a
7-6 (7-5), 6-2 win over Choi at No. 6 singles to clinch the victory
for the Cobras.
Lees-McRae returns to the courts on Wednesday, March 14 when the
Bobcats travel to Charlotte, N.C. to take on Queens University of
Charlotte in conference play at 12 p.m.
