HARTSVILLE, S.C. --- The Coker College softball
team held Lees-McRae College to one run on six hits on Sunday,
sweeping a Conference Carolinas doubleheader from the Bobcats by
scores of 8-0 and 4-1.
Coker (18-18, 10-9 CC) scored 12 runs on 12 hits in the
twin-bill, besting Lees-McRae (12-25, 3-7 CC) by an 8-0 margin in
five innings in the opener before edging the Bobcats, 4-1, in the
nightcap. Sydney Weatherford and Katelyn Szupello paced the Cobras
with three hits each, as Weatherford drove in three runs and scored
two.
Kim Coley (Marion, N.C.) and Jessica Smith (Gastonia, N.C.)
paced the Bobcats with two hits each, as Amanda Decker (Apex, N.C.)
drove in her fifth run of the season for Lees-McRae in the
nightcap. Kristen Oakes (Lenoir, N.C.) and Decker each tallied a
hit for the Bobcats in the twin-bill.
Laurel Gregg (Mars Hill, N.C.) got the nod in game one,
surrendering eight unearned runs on five hits in four innings of
work. Holli Crickenberger (Boydton, Va.) took the ball in game two,
allowing three runs on five hits in four innings of work, as Oakes
surrendered one run on two hits over the final two frames.
Game One: Coker 8, Lees-McRae 0 - 5 innings (Box Score)
Coker got on the board early, plating the game's first run in
the opening inning to take a 1-0 lead when Sarah Rountree scored on
a passed ball. The Cobras broke the game open in the second,
plating six runs on four hits and one Bobcat miscue to push the
lead to 7-0 following a two-run single by Stacy Burr.
Coker would add a run in the fourth to equal the final margin of
8-0, as Becky Dillon allowed three base runners and retired the
final 11 batters she faced en route to the shutout victory.
Game Two: Coker 4, Lees-McRae 1 (Box Score)
The Cobras took an early 1-0 lead in the third, plating the
game's first run when Szupello tripled and scored on a wild pitch.
After Coker stretched the lead to 3-0 with a pair of runs in the
fourth, Lees-McRae got on the board with a tally in the top of the
fifth when Decker singled home Oakes to trim the margin to 3-1.
Coker would answer with a run in the bottom of the inning,
taking a 4-1 lead on an RBI single by Burr. The Bobcats started to
rally with two outs in the seventh, putting a runner on first
following a single by Smith before Logan Cox retired the next
batter by way of the "K" to close out the inning and seal the
win.
Lees-McRae returns to the diamond on Monday when the Bobcats
travel to Gaffney, S.C. to take on Limestone College in conference
play at 2 p.m.
