BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae College
men's tennis team took two of three matches in doubles play, and
registered three wins in singles action en route to a 5-4 victory
over visiting Lenoir-Rhyne University on Monday afternoon in
non-conference play.
Lees-McRae's (5-11) tandem of Alexander Hayes (Mexico City,
Mexico) and Skylar Warren (Asheville, N.C.) opened the afternoon
with an 8-4 victory over Lenoir-Rhyne's (1-14) duo of Robby
Blackburn and Aroon Khatter, before the Bears' Grayson Dunn and
Jarod Styres defeated Pedro De Sousa Nunes (Florianopolis, Santa
Catarina, Brazil) and Marcelo Tatai (Sao Paulo, Brazil), 8-3.
Graham Battle (Boone, N.C.) and Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.)
answered with an 8-6 win over Michael Owens and David
Richardson.
Hayes gave the Bobcats a 3-1 advantage with a 6-2, 6-3 victory
over Richardson at No. 2 singles, as Warren defeated Owens, 6-3,
6-2 in the third flight. Choi delivered the decisive point for
Lees-McRae at No. 6 singles, defeating Blackburn, 6-2, 6-1. Khatter
rallied for a 2-6, 7-5, 1-0 victory over Nunes in the first flight,
as Dunn defeated Battle, 6-3, 0-6, 6-1 at No. 4. Styres posted a
4-6, 7-5, 1-0 win against Tatai at No. 5 singles.
Lees-McRae now awaits the final pairings for next week's
Conference Carolinas Tournament, to be hosted by Erskine College at
the Sumter Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C. on April 20-22. The
Bobcats currently hold the sixth spot in the conference standings,
which would grant them the sixth seed in the tournament if the
season ended today.
