BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae men's tennis team tested Tusculum all afternoon, but fell 9-0, in its season opener Wednesday at the LMC Tennis Courts in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Pioneers (1-0) held their opposition at bay in doubles play while the Bobcats (1-0) saw a promising LMC debut from freshman Gabriel Muniz (Sao, Brazil).
Muniz gave Jonas Winkelmann fits at No. 3 singles despite falling 6-2, 6-4. The freshman teamed up with junior Carlos Pinel (Vitoria, Espírito Santo, Brazil) in No. 2 doubles and fell short 8-3.
Pinel dropped a tight battle to Nicolas Planchard at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-1.
Sophomore Garrett Lakey (North Wilkesboro, N.C.) dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to Leon Seiz at No. 4 singles.
LMC travels to Sumter, S.C. to participate in the Palmetto Tennis Center Invitational starting Sept. 12.
