BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae men's tennis team fell in a thrilling nonconference battle against Mars Hill, 5-4, Monday afternoon at the LMC Tennis Courts in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Lions (1-0) grabbed their first win of the season when Markus Gattner and Raymond Donovan scraped by with a 9-8 win in No. 2 doubles to claim the deciding point. The Bobcats (0-2) saw impressive play from freshman Sebastian Zuhr (Curitiba, Puerto Rico), who collected a win at No. 3 doubles and No. 6 singles.
Zuhr dropped the first set to Blake Covington, but responded with authority by taking the next two, 6-1 and 6-3, respectively.
LMC's Gabriel Muniz (Soao, Brazil) handled Sam Lee, 6-1, 6-4 in No. 3 singles play.
Sophomore Garrett Lakey (North Wilkesboro, N.C.) impressed with a dispatching of Gattner, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 singles.
The Bobcats return to action Saturday at 10:30 a.m. when they welcome Lenoir-Rhyne.
