FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. --- Junior Carlos Pinel gutted out a three-set thriller at No. 2 singles, leading the Lees-McRae men's tennis team to a 5-4 win against Conference Carolinas foe Emmanuel (Ga.) Sunday at the Emmanuel Tennis Courts in Franklin Springs, Ga.
The Bobcats (4-10, 1-3 CC) earned their first conference win while Hang Lak Choi (Newton, N.C.) and Sebastian Zuhr (Burlington, N.C.) picked up two wins each. The Lions (1-10, 1-5) saw Lucas Vellozo and David Forehand win a pair of matches each.
Zuhr and Choi outmuscled the duo of Joaquin Marshall and Tyler Terrell, 9-7, in No. 3 doubles.
Pinel (Vitoria, Espírito Santo, Brazil) entered his No. 2 singles match while the overall score was tied at four. The junior dropped the first set in a tiebreaker (4), but rallied back to take the second 6-3. Pinel dug deep and produced a 7-5 win in the third, giving the Bobcats the team win.
Choi ousted Ben Strickland at No. 5 singles, 6-3, 6-1.
Zuhr defeated Austin Spivey 6-2, 6-3 at No. 6 singles.
Freshman Gabriel Muniz (Soao, Brazil) downed Marshall by identical 6-4 scores.
Coach Skylar Warren's squad welcomes Pfeiffer Friday, April 3 at 1 p.m. to Banner Elk, N.C.
