BANNER ELK, N.C. --- The Lees-McRae men's tennis team dropped a 9-0 decision to Division I foe Appalachian State Tuesday afternoon at the Lees-McRae Indoor Tennis Courts in Banner Elk, N.C.
The Mountaineers (1-1) gutted out their first win of the season thanks to strong play from Oliver Casey and Jack Maddocks. The Bobcats (0-2) pushed ASU to the limit throughout the day with strong play all around.
LMC fell by identical 6-4 scores in No. 1 and 3 doubles before being upended, 6-1, at No. 2 doubles.
Sophomore Gabriel Muniz (Soao, Brazil) was scrappy at No. 2 singles despite falling 6-3, 6-4, to Maddocks. Muniz has the Mountaineer on the ropes in the second set after claiming the first three games.
Senior Joao Araujo (Curitiba, Brazil) hung tight at No. 1 singles, however, ASU's Casey was able to claim a 6-2, 7-6 victory.
Coach Don Marriott's squad returns to action Feb. 14 at 3 p.m. against Lenoir-Rhyne in Hickory, N.C.
