BELMONT, N.C. --- Freshman Cole Douglas-Fields picked his first collegiate singles win, but the Lees-McRae men's tennis team fell in their Conference Carolinas opener, 8-1, to Belmont Abbey Tuesday afternoon at Reidy Tennis Center in Belmont, N.C.
The Crusaders improved to 3-6, 1-3 CC while the Bobcats dropped to 0-5, 0-1.
Douglas-Fields (Asheville, N.C.) took care of business against Eduardo Escobar, 6-2, 4-6, 10-2, in No. 5 singles.
Sophomore Thomas Deeley (Oxford, England) dropped a nail biter, 8-6, to Laine Harrett in No. 6 singles action.
Junior Garrett Lakey (North Wilkesboro, N.C.) won the opening set against Grant Goldin in No. 3 singles, but lost the final two, 6-1, 6-0.
LMC's No. 1 and 2 doubles lost by an 8-6 and 9-7 score, respectively.
The Bobcats enjoy a 17-day break before trekking to North Greenville Friday, March 18 at 2 p.m. in Tigerville, S.C. for a CC battle.
