Men's Tennis Falls Short in Thriller at Southern Wesleyan

CENTRAL, S.C. --- Sophomore Gabriel Muniz and junior Garrett Lakey won two matches apiece while the Lees-McRae men's tennis team fell short in a thriller, 5-4, to Southern Wesleyan in Conference Carolinas play Saturday morning at Hoke Sloan Tennis Center in Central, S.C.

The Warriors climb to 5-9, 4-1 CC with the win while the Bobcats fall to 0-7, 0-3.

Muniz (Soao, Brazil) and senior João Araujo (Curitiba, Brazil) fended off Stan Grzeslo and Keegan Barkley for an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles.

LMC took a 2-0 advantage when Lakey (North Wilkesboro, N.C.) and Sebastian Zuhr (Burlington, N.C.) survived a battle from Camilo Sandoval and Daniel Zapata, 8-7, at No. 2 doubles.

After dropping the first set, 2-6, Muniz, rallied back to win his bout at No. 2 singles with 6-3, 6-4, victories in the second and third set, respectively.

Lakey defeated Harry Reed in a tough battle, 7-6, 6-4, at No. 4 singles.

Sophomore Thomas Deely (Oxford, England) dropped a three-set heartbreaker to Urs Widow at No. 6 singles.

LMC welcomes Lee University Friday, March 25 at 2 p.m. to Banner Elk, N.C.
