Men’s Soccer stumbles against Barton, 2-1

BANNER ELK, N.C.Harrison Watts scored his fourth goal of the season, off assists by Johannes Oeksnevad and Erick Uvalle, but it was not enough as Barton tallied the game-winning goal in the 84th minute to clinch the 2-1 victory over the host Bobcats in the Conference Carolinas contest this afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Lees-McRae grabbed momentum early in the contest, by tallying four shots in the first 17 minutes of action, but it was Barton who broke the deadlock with a goal in the 17th minute.
  • The Bobcats had one of their best scoring chances in the 38th minute as Watts' shot was saved to keep the score at 1-0 at halftime.
  • The Bulldogs nearly doubled their score in the opening minutes of the second half, with five shots in a five-minute span, but failed to push across their second goal.
  • Lees-McRae finally evened the score in the 84th minute as Watts collected a pass from Oeksnevad off an initial cross by Uvalle and buried his fourth goal of the season into the top left corner.
  • The score remained tied for only 37 seconds as the Bulldogs scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 84th minute.
  • Gray Smith had one final chance to even the score with three second remaining, but the header just missed left to preserve the Barton victory.
  • Joshua Garvilla finished with seven saves in net for the Bobcats.
  • Lees-McRae held a slim 17-15 edge in shots, while Barton finished with a 10-5 advantage in shots-on-goal.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Luis Hernandez Velasco scored both goals for the Bulldogs, off assists by Immanuel Akpeme and Gabriel Slemer Lopes.
  • Jacob Randolph finished with four saves in net for Barton.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bobcats will visit "Battle for the Blue Ridge Cup" rival King on Wednesday, Oct. 27 at 4 p.m.
