Women’s Basketball rallies past Southern Wesleyan, 59-51

CENTRAL, S.C.Malikah Meyers and MaKayla Smith each finished with a game-high 13 points as the Lees-McRae women's basketball team used a 13-5 second-half run to rally past host Southern Wesleyan, 59-51, in the Conference Carolinas action this evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Meyers shot 5 of 6 from the charity stripe to go along with seven rebounds and three assists.
  • Smith chipped in three rebounds, while Jessica Henderson and Destiny Johnson each tallied eight points and nine rebounds.
  • Arriana Lizarraga added eight points and two rebounds off the bench.
  • Both teams traded points for most of the opening 10 minutes of action, until a layup by Lizarraga gave the Bobcats a 13-11 edge at the first intermission.
  • Southern Wesleyan outscored Lees-McRae 17-5 in the second frame to claim a 28-18 lead in the low-scoring first half.
  • After the Warriors used a layup to extend the lead to 30-20 with 8:45 left in the third stanza, the Bobcats connected on a three-point field goal by Smith on the next possession to open up a 20-10 run that evened the score at 40-40 at the final intermission.
  • Lees-McRae recaptured the lead on back-to-back points by Aurora Roberts and held momentum as the Bobcats claimed the 59-51 conference win.
  • The Bobcats held a 18-12 edge in offensive rebounds en route to outscoring the Warriors 15-3 in second-chance points.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Amy Soumare finished with 12 points and a game-high 12 rebounds to pace the Warriors.
  • Caroline Reese and Halee Morrison each chipped in nine points.
 
UP NEXT:
The Bobcats host King in the "Battle for the Blue Ridge Cup" showdown on Thursday at 5 p.m.
