Women’s Basketball falls short against North Greenville, 51-49

BANNER ELK, N.C.Destiny Johnson scored a game-high 17 points, but it was not enough as North Greenville connected on a three-point field goal with 27 seconds remaining to escape with a 51-49 road victory over the Bobcats in the Williams Gymnasium this evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:
  • Johnson paced the Bobcats in scoring to go along with five rebounds and five steals.
  • Davinique Campbell tallied 10 points and a team-high six rebounds.
  • MaKayla Smith chipped in eight points off of the bench.
  • The Crusaders and the Bobcats matched each other point-for-point in the first quarter until a late layup by Smith gave Lees-McRae a 9-8 lead after the first 10 minutes of action.
  • The low-scoring first half continue in the second frame as the Bobcats closed on an 8-5 run to claim a 24-21 halftime lead.
  • North Greenville responded with a quick run in the third stanza, but the Bobcats closed the frame on a 9-0 run to take a 41-34 lead at the final intermission.
  • Both teams battled for the majority of the fourth quarter with a late run by the Crusaders trimming the deficit to 49-48 with just under two minutes remaining.
  • Haylee Luttrell connected on a three-point field goal with 27 seconds left to give North Greenville a 51-49.
  • A final shot by Johnson as time expired missed as the Crusaders escaped with the conference win.
  • North Greenville held a 13-4 advantage in second-chance points to overcome being outscored 24-20 in the paint.
 
FOR THE FOES:
  • Haylee Luttrell and Journey Muhammad finished with 13 and 12 points respectively to lead the Crusaders.
  • Peace Okeke tallied nine points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
 
UP NEXT:
Lees-McRae returns to the court on Tuesday, Feb. 9 as it visits Converse for a 5 p.m. start.
